An extensive refurbishment of Durham Castle has been completed for Durham University. The world famous Norman castle is Grade 1 listed and, combined with Durham Cathedral, is designated a World Heritage Site. It has been the home of University College since 1840 and houses around 100 students.
GSS partner Jonathan Hunter explained, ‘The project included undertaking sensitive alterations and remodelling of student accommodation. This included upgrading all 34 bedrooms in the castle keep and providing new en-suite facilities in the majority of the rooms.’
Elsewhere in the castle the Great Hall, the largest in the country until it was shortened at the end of the 15th century, has also been fully refurbished. The Great Hall serves as a dining room for the college and is also used for outside functions.
In total, the value of the refurbishment works at the castle was in order of £3.2million.
