Whitby Youth Hostel
« BackArchitect: John Cunnington Architects
John Cunnington Architects was set up at the beginning of June 1990, since when we have established an excellent reputation for our thorough approach to design and conservation enabling our steady and continued growth.
Abbey House, a significant grade I listed building on the Whitby Headland, has been unoccupied since the departure of the previous tenants, Countrywide Holidays Association in February 2000. The YHA have leased the building from the owners, the Strickland Estate and the project will secure the future of this historically and strategically important building on the Whitby Abbey site. It represents a further significant step in the partnership between Strickland Estates, English Heritage, Scarborough Borough Council and, now, the Youth Hostels Association of England and Wales.
John Cunnington Architects were appointed to carry out the project which respects and enhances the architectural and historic importance of the building whilst securing essential fabric repairs and meeting the high quality of accommodation required by the YHA.
